I have a friend who is in the market for a pen tablet. Sounds simple right?…just send them down to the local store and buy one. Well, it's not that easy. There are so many to choose from and if you don't know what you are doing you could end up buying something that really doesn't do the job. So I decided to take it upon myself to do the research for him to find the best pen tablet on the market today and eventually came up with the Wacom Bamboo Fun Pen Tablet.

What To Look For When Buying a pen tablet It didn't take me long to realize that there are a few important things to keep in mind when buying a pen tablet.

These are:

• The tablet has both pen and track functions Easy Installation (Plug and Play)
• A large active pen and touch area
• Must have excellent integration with Photoshop
• Bundled with essential software

If you just buy the first pen tablet you see based on price alone then you are destined for trouble particularly if you are going to be using it on a regular basis. So stick with me here as I will be explaining each of these in relation to the Wacom Bamboo Fun pen tablet

Levels of Pressure Sensitivity:

This in easy to understand terms allows the user to adjust the pen pressure to give it a more pen on paper feel for doing fine work or rough fill in work. From what I learned this is what sets cheap pen tablets apart from quality tablets and is the difference between loving your tablet and using it everyday or keeping it on your desk as a expensive paper weight.

Integration:

The Wacom bamboo Fun Pen tablet has terrific integration with a variety of software programs but the one most people will be interested in and the most important is Photoshop. This tablet allows you to navigate and use the functions of Photoshop without any problems, it is like they were made to go together.

How Much Should You Expect to Pay?

The Wacom Bamboo Fun pen tablet is available on the website for $199 but you really shouldn't be paying any more than $170.00 for this . The cheapest we have seen it is on Amazon who consistently sell this for under $170.00 .

This has received rave reviews from most consumers on the net with an average of 4.5 out of 5 from most reviewers on Amazon and the website itself. Here are some of the comments to date: Installation was a snap. Download the latest drivers from the Wacom site, plug it into a USB port, and you're all set. I tried it out on two laptops and a desktop and installation was flawless on each.

I can safely say, that the Touch tablet will be able to replace my mouse.

As a graphic designer / illustrator I've used aWacom tablet for years and I'm very happy with the product.

The pen works VERY well with Illustrator and Photoshop.

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend who loves to cartoon and draw. This product is his favorite new toy! I used it myself a few times and I have to say it is very easy to use and is so much fun! The bundled software is great – no need to buy any other program

The battery-less pen, with two configurable buttons and 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity, is very comfortable in the hand and I admit it, I love the eraser on the end.

Any complaints?

I found very few complaints for this on consumer sites around the internet. One consumer did suggest I found that all the gestures worked as advertised, except the DRAG feature. The user manual (a PDF on the DVD) said to re-install the drivers and had a link to Wacon to find the latest driver. The re-installation was easy and good, but did not solve the problem. The user manual also had a number for Tech Support. I called it and talked to a Support Person (IN THE US!). They were very helpful and did NOT treat me like an idiot like so many tech support people do. They walked me through several processes to figure out what was wrong, but it did not solve the problem. I AM happy to report that it was not the Tablet's or the Software problem, but MINE. I found that I was not performing the "gesture" quickly enough to Drag items. Once I figured that out, that feature worked as advertised.
