Comparing the iPed To The iPad: How Does The Clone Stack Up?

The response to the articles that I've been writing about the iPed (sometimes also called the aPad) and been immediate and brisk. Consumers are very intrigued with a less expensive alternative to the technology of the original.  And, the clones aren't new.  They've already been evaluated (and mostly accepted) with the iPhone clones.

Of course, people will only accept a clone if it stacks up favorably to the original.  So, in the following article, I'll discuss how the iPed clone stacks up to the original iPad.  And, I'll also tell you the ways that I think the clone is actually better.

Price:  Obviously, the biggest draw to a knock off or replica tablet is going to be the cost.  And, it's the price that make people hesitate about the iPad. $499 is a hefty price tag.  When you compare that to around $150 for the best, most current iPed with a rockchip processor, it's easy to see why the clones are so attractive.  And $25.00 for 2GB of data for the iPad can be pretty pricey also.  With a replica, you aren't tied to one company or network for data.  You're free to shop around which can also save a significant amount of money.

Operating Systems: This is another big difference between these two models.  Apple's operating system for both the iPad and the iPhone is called iOS. The knock off tablets (including the iPed / aPad) use android's operating system. Android is open source and though it still probably doesn't have as many apps as Apple, it is growing and the list is pretty extensive.  Many people prefer the open source OS, but not every one does. I like android's ability to provide all of the cool Google applications like chrome, Google maps, gmail, the calendar and Google talk, to name only a few.

Performance:  It's pretty much a given that the iPad is considered to be the gold standard of the tablets.  There are a lot of things to like about it.  I don't think that anyone would deny that.  But, many people are pleasantly surprised by the performance of the clones.  This is especially true if you get one of the faster rockchip models with more memory.  All of the features are there with the clones.  The housing is extremely similar. Sure, the clone is not the original model.  It's not going to be exactly the same.  But many people find it's similar enough, especially considering the cost savings.

You can most certainly browse the web, email, text, talk, read ebooks, watch movies, and listen to music on the replica tablets quite easily. This is the most commonly used features but there are more.  If these things are more important to you than a label, then the clones might make you quite happy.

Places Where I Think The iPed Is Actually Better:  Other than the price and the open source operating system, the iPed has a digital camera and web cam which is omitted on the original.  The clone has a removable battery that the user can replace themselves.  The original does not. Also the iPad doesn't have a USB port or anywhere to put an SD card for expandable memory.  But, the iPed has all of these things.
