Overseas App Makers Not Strangers to U.S. Top 50 Apps

It dawned on us last week while exchanging e-mails with the creators of some of the U.S. App Store's most popular apps that many of them were responding while we were asleep here in San Francisco.  Were these developers burning the midnight candle improving their current app hits or putting the finishing touches on the next blockbuster app and only able to reply at strange hours?  It turns out these developers were responding to us during their normal business hours from their overseas headquarters. 

Foreign based app developers represent a big percentage of the top 50 apps in the U.S. App Store.  We took a look last Thursday at the top fifty apps and twenty of them, or 40%, were created by non-U.S. based companies.  Twelve foreign countries accounted for these twenty apps with four of France's apps piercing the list and Australia accounting for three.

Four of the five top paid apps come from foreign countries:  #1 Angry Birds (Finland), #2 Stick Skater (Australia), #3 Doodle Jump (Croatia) and #4 Eye Illusions (Belarus).  Which U.S. company rounded out the top five?  Redwood City, California based Entertainment Arts, the entertainment software giant, who brought back the 1983 arcade classic, Dragon's Lair.   

It is easy to think U.S. based companies should dominate the most popular apps list in our country since Apple Inc. is based in Cupertino, California and Silicon Valley is teeming with developers.  But there is something to be said about Europe's quirky nature that earned shows such as Monty Python's Flying Circus a spot in TIME magazine's "100 Best TV Shows of All Time" in 2007 and which appeals to Americans' tastes in apps.  If you have played Angry Birds with its infectious yet idiosyncratic soundtrack or Doodle Jump with its funnel-nosed main character and propeller hats, you know what we mean and why these apps have proven so popular in the U.S..
