How to run movies on the go for kids

Since you're willing to get three portable DVD players or an iPad to solve this problem, then you must make at least seven figures annually. If that's the case, will you buy me an iPad, too?

But back to the problem at hand: Perhaps the first thing to do is go through your DVDs and see which ones your kids would be willing to see together. If they insist on watching something separately, then it becomes a more expensive solution.

Before answering your main question, you said your kids are ages 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 years. For those ages, let me suggest just about any Pixar movie such as "A Bug's Life," "Finding Nemo," "Monsters Inc." or either "Toy Story" (the third will be released June 18). Kids of any ages -- including adults! -- enjoy those movies. Also, children's TV shows such as PBS' "Arthur" can be a good choice, and are more flexible, since each segment is less than 15 minutes long.

As for what device to use, if you can convince them to watch the same movie, the best option might be a laptop for its larger screen size for the kids to share. If it has a DVD

drive (and it should if it's no more than six or seven years old), you can run the DVD with software such as PowerDVD or the built-in Windows Media Player (if it's a Windows laptop) or DVD Player if it's a Mac. That's a much better option than buying it through iTunes if you already own the DVD. (Newer films -- particularly from Disney -- are now coming in combo packs where they include the Blu-ray, DVD and digital copy of the same movie).

If you have the DVD you could also rip it to the laptop with the help of free software on the Internet (which I can't really go into right now, um, for legal reasons). The advantage of playing a digital copy of the movie, from either ripping it or buying it on iTunes, is it uses less battery power to run the movie than with a DVD drive.

At today's prices, three portable DVD players will cost you at least $300, their battery life is usually short, and they also have terrible viewing angles. As for your suggestion for an iPad, I suspect you just want one for yourself (and don't blame you trying!).

Finally, to share the sound with everyone, I could not find a three-way splitter, but Belkin does make a five-way headphone splitter. That's going to be a cheaper solution than, say, buying two two-way splitters connected in a chain from the main audio jack.
