5. Dell Streak

The Dell Streak was the first serious competitor to the iPad to rear its head, but on many levels it's not a competitor at all. For a start the streak only has a 5-inch screen, so much of the visual impact of the iPad cannot be replicated by Dell's tablet. Second, the Streak can be used as a mobile phone, assuming you don't mind holding something the size of a sandwich up to your ear.

But what the Streak did show is how well Android lends itself to a device that's significantly larger than a phone. It was therefore quite disappointing that Dell chose to launch the Streak running Android 1.6, rather than the 2.1 version that was shipping on most phones at the time.

The Streak is a significantly different product to the iPad, but it's also a very good one, and unlike many of the devices in this list, it's one that you can buy right now. So, if you're looking for a tablet device that isn't as large as the iPad, but is still stuffed to the gills with features, Dell's diminutive baby is definitely still worth a look.

4. Toshiba Folio

Toshiba showed off its new Folio tablet to journalists at IFA last month. The Folio is aimed directly at the iPad with its 10.1-inch screen making it a large device, but one with a similar visual experience to Apple's baby.

The Folio is based on Nvidia's Tegra 2 platform and runs the latest 2.2 Froyo version of Android. The version that we got our paws on at IFA sported both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, but 3G data was conspicuous by its absence. Toshiba is planning a version with 3G, but the first version of the Folio is clearly aimed at the Wi-Fi version of the iPad.

Highlights include an SD card slot for expanding the storage, a front facing webcam for video calling and an HDMI output for playing back HD video content on your TV or monitor. Less positive is the weight of 760g, making the Folio 80g heavier than the iPad, which itself isn't particularly light.

There's no official UK pricing as yet, but a €399 price has been mooted, making the Folio significantly cheaper than the Wi-Fi iPad.

3. HP PalmPad

The Slate may not have appeared, but that doesn't mean that HP has given up on a tablet device. When the company bought Palm, it was clear to most that WebOS was one of the driving factors of that acquisition. Now, armed with a truly impressive and versatile touch based user interface, HP just has to come up with the hardware.

HP has already admitted that a WebOS based tablet is being readied for an early 2011 launch, so we'll probably be seeing it at CES in January. HP's Todd Bradley also referred to the forthcoming device as the "PalmPad", but whether that's a working title, or the actual name for the retail product remains to be seen.

There's not a huge amount of hard data about the PalmPad yet, but given how good WebOS is on the PalmPre smartphone, it's fair to assume that it will be even more impressive on a larger, more powerful device. And, HP does know a thing or two about building hardware.

2. RIM BlackBerry PlayBook

RIM's BlackBerry devices are, in essence, responsible for the ubiquitous nature of mobile email. But it's touch-screen devices have struggled to compete with the iPhone and Android handsets. Despite that, RIM is jumping feet first into the tablet market with its BlackBerry PlayBook.

The PlayBook is a 7-inch tablet device with a screen resolution of 1,024 x 600. It has a 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM and up to 32GB of storage, depending on the model. The screen is a capacitive unit and RIM are promising that it will support some unique gesture technology.

The PlayBook also sports front and rear mounted cameras, with 3-megapixel and 5-megapixel resolutions respectively. That's some pretty impressive image capturing hardware, especially for the front facing camera. Connectivity wise, the PlayBook has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but no 3G data, at least not for the first generation product.

The PlayBook will be running RIM's own QNX OS, making it unique in the market. It also promises impressive video codec support, with native DivX playback making it something of a rival for Archos devices.

The PlayBook is due to ship in early 2011 in the US, while the rest of the world will have to wait until mid-2011.

1. Samsung Galaxy Tab

There are many reasons why the Samsung Galaxy Tab tops this list, but the most important one is that you can buy it. Well, you'll be able to buy it very soon at least. Unlike the BlackBerry PlayBook that will be available at some unspecified date in mid-2011, Samsung has officially announced that the Galaxy Tab will be on sale November 1st – not long to wait then!

As if you don't know already, the Galaxy Tab is a 7-inch device, with a 1,024 x 600 widescreen resolution. It runs the latest 2.2 Froyo version of Android, which is driven by a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU. You get integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and 3G data. There's also a microSD card slot for expanding the storage easily and cheaply – something that's unlikely to ever be available in an Apple product.

The device itself is beautifully designed, although not quite to the industrial chic of the iPad. However, it's smaller and lighter than the iPad, but the overall experience isn't particularly compromised by the smaller screen. It appears that 7-inch is the real sweet spot for tablet devices.

On the whole, the Samsung Galaxy Tab outdoes the iPad in the majority of areas that matter. However, it's worth remembering that Apple is likely to be pushing out a second generation version of the iPad next year.

And even though the BlackBerry PlayBook looks like it could best both the iPad and Galaxy Tab, as seen in our comparison feature, who knows what both Apple and Samsung will have on sale by the time the PlayBook launches.

So, if you're looking for the best, most feature rich tablet device that you can buy right now, the Samsung Galaxy Tab should be top of your list.
