Connecting a Macbook To Your TV

If you have one of Apple's new Macbooks you may have already ascertained, with some bewilderment and frustration, that there doesn't seem to be a straight forward way to hook it up to a tv that is not an HDTV. Analog TVs are still in use by so many people, including students who own Macs.

A lot people out there (myself included) don't have an HDTV, yet still wish to watch Hulu or Netflix or YouTube on a TV screen from a Macbook.

With the new Macbook there is presently no adapter that features an RCA or s-video output that hooks up to non-HD TVs.

After some diligent study I ascertained what it takes to hook a unibody Macbook to a non-HD television. All it takes is one extra element of equipment. It's not even a very expensive piece of hardware, either.

Without going in to a lot of technical infomation, the essential difficulty is that a non-HDTV functions on an analog signal and an HDTV functions on a digital signal.

It's not actually complicated, it only requires an additional component. It works great, too.

Depending on the model of Macbook you have, you will have one of two distinctive video output ports on the side of your computer.

The newer Macbooks possess a Mini Displayport video output on the side. The older type of Macbook will have a Mini DVI port. Each of these models will require an adapter and some cables to be able to connect to your TV, but the newer Macbook will need something additional.
