Display on Samsung Galaxy Tab

Samsung Galaxy Tab is a recently released tablet as a direct competitor to the Apple's iPad. This tablet is trying to be different from iPad, both in size and features. It's bringing into the game a whole new user experience, being smaller and lighter. This article focuses only on the user interface and the display of Galaxy Tab.

Display on Galaxy Tab

It's equipped with a 7-inch capactive touchscreen that brings an amazingly sharp picture. Display has a pixel density of 192 dpi which means the resolution is 1024 x 600 pixels. Maybe the picture quality of the built-in TFT LCD cannot match the AMOLED display, but that's just the technical aspect. In reality picture had vivid colors, is very clear, and I think that most users will be very satisfied with it.

If you put the Galaxy Tab display on direct sunlight, it will show the advantage of the LCD over AMOLED. Although it loses some contrast, it still remains perfectly viewable. That cannot be said for the mentioned AMOLED displays, as they lose all their qualities on the sunlight.

It's well known that LCD displays usualy have a not very good viewing angle. There's one advantage of AMOLED over TFT LCD: wider viewing angle.  Display loses visibility when viewed from the side. It's not really a big issue, because it can always be directed by the user considering that can be used with one hand.

The multi-touch screen is very reponsive to all gestures. All your gestures are accurately registered by the Galaxy Tab, and the on-screen keyboard will not give you a hard time adjusting to it. It's useful in both typing positions, horizontal and vertical.

Samsung TouchWiz UI

A great addition to the Android OS is Samsung TouchWiz UI, which is available on all Samsung devices that run Android. Home screen can have five to nine different layouts. Shifting between them is done by scrolling left ot right, and they can all be customized by application icons. All the usual multi-touch gestures are supported, such as pinch zooming, etc.

TouchWiz UI brings Samsung Apps along with the Android Market. Samsung Apps is an application store directed specificaly at Samsung devices. It's bad that Samsung Apps can only be accessed through the SIM card network, while Android Market can also be accessed through WiFi.

Despite few minor annoyances, Samsung Galaxy Tab is a great tablet, and maybe the only true competition to Apple iPad.
