10 Homemade Kindle Cases

It's only natural that you'd want to protect your Kindle. After all, it cost a pretty penny and contains up to 3,000 books. But have you noticed how expensive some of the Kindle cases out there are? Yikes. If you've got some creativity and the desire, you can make your own Kindle case for next to nothing. Here are 10 ideas.

 

1. The Fake Book Kindle Case. You can go all out with these, painting the edges with gold leaf to make it look like an expensive book, or adding marbleized paper on the edges. A flexible case flap is better than a non-flexible one, and you want to make the spine flexible too, so you can lay it out flat on a table.

2. The Case that Stands Up on its Hind Legs. You'll see in the linked video that this Kindle case was made out of an elastic band, an old binder, fabric, scissors, and some elementary sewing skills. And it looks great, too! Best part is, you can stand it upright so you can read hands-free without hunching over a table.

3. The Basic Cloth Cover (Kindle 2). Start with a leather cover for the Kindle 2, fabric cut to 18.5 x 9.75 inches, fusible (iron-on) interfacing, and any decorative doodads you might want to add. You need to be able to do some basic sewing, but the photo tutorial takes you through the whole process.

4. The Notebook Kindle Cover with Extra Functionality. You need a makers notebook and a sharp knife. You basically core out pages that add up to the same thickness as your Kindle. When you're done you'll have a hard-sided cover and (extra functionality time) extra pages for notes! Woo hoo!

5. The Oberon Kindle Cover on a Budget. Sure Oberon Kindle Cases are awesome, but if you stretched your budget to pay for the Kindle, they may be a little out of your price range. Use some canvas, some cotton, and some determination, and you can make yourself a designer original knock-off for next to nothing.

6. The Booklike Kindle Case. Hide your Kindle in a book knock-off like this one, and you can guarantee the kids won't touch it. For extra protection, store on a bookshelf between your two college textbooks on ordinary differential equations.

7. The "Jeans Flatter Everyone" Kindle Case. If you are still mourning those ultra soft, faded denim jeans that you loved, but blew the knees out on, why not reincarnate them as a Kindle cover. Make it with one of the pockets on the outside and you've added a layer of practicality, for storing earphones, pens, and the like..

8. The Binder Kindle Cover. You'll definitely make an impression with this beauty. All it takes is a 3-ring binder, ribbon, thread, and glue to make a protective case for the Kindle DX. And you can do it for under ten bucks, so what's not to like?

9. The Cloth Bag for the Kindle 2. It's not going to protect your Kindle from, say, being run over by your car, but it's aces for preventing screen scratches and absorbing the occasional light bump. With the back pocket to hold accessories, and Velcro closure, it's a quietly spiffy style statement that protects your investment.

10. Kindle Camouflage for Repelling the Curious. Until everyone and their brother has a Kindle, you'll probably have to put up with nosey people asking you about your Kindle and weighing in on it versus the Nook, iPad, or what have you. Choose the book from which you make this case wisely, and you will not have that problem.
