Tablets may not grow like netbooks have in the last couple of years. Microsoft began trying to promote tablets years ago. Intel's app store, the AppUp Center, is designed for a range of devices using Atom CPUs, including netbooks and smartphones as well as tablets.

"The strong first quarter builds on the fourth quarter rebound and shows rising confidence in the PC supply chain and commercial client base, along with persistent demand from consumers," said Loren Loverde, a vice president at IDC,in a statement. "The commercial gains are a cornerstone of a market rebound that we've been expecting and are now seeing in the data. Despite continued strengthening of commercial demand and solid consumer and emerging market results, year-on-year growth is likely to slow in coming quarters as year-ago comparisons get more difficult."

In the months after the release of Windows 7, Microsoft also dealt with complaints of poor battery life for some laptops upgraded to the operating system, with a percentage of users reporting a drastically reduced charge. In a Feb. 8 posting on the Engineering Windows 7 blog, Windows president Steven Sinofsky suggested that the fault ultimately lay in the laptop batteries themselves, not anything having to do with Windows 7.

To cut down on the time and effort you spend on each sale, you may want to consider going to a handful of Websites cropping up that serve as a broker for sales of used tech.

Sites such as Gazelle and BuyMyTronics will let you immediately get a price quote on (most) of your used stuff. Just go to the site, pick your device from the menu, and fill out a few details such as the device's condition and included equipment (manuals, cables, and so on), and you'll get an estimate.

"The U.S. PC market exhibited encouraging signs of recovery in the first quarter," said Andrew Hanson, a research analyst with IDC, in a statement. "While part of this growth is a correction from a dismal 1Q 09,some of it was driven by new PC refresh projects in the commercial markets. This is in addition to ongoing consumer appetite for more mobile devices as price points remain attractive and the multi-device per user environment expands."

That's one of the issues with refurbs. You might get a great deal, but you might also buy a headache if the device is not as advertised. At least you can take comfort in the fact that manufacturer refurbs are sold with warranties, so if there's a problem with it, you will eventually get a working unit. You'll be out some time, but you'll save money.

And sometimes refurbs can be superior to new items. After sending a new Seagate hard drive with a vibration problem back to the store, only to get another wobbler, I sent the drive directly to the manufacturer. Seagate sent me a refurb, which was quiet, fast, and has been working like a champ in my MacBook(MacBook Pro 15" Batteries) for a year. As I said, I like the personal touch I know I get from refurbs.

Unless, that is, your itinerary includes the beach, where the bright light largely renders the screen unreadable, and where concerns about thieves, sunblock and sand will probably outweigh any benefits the iPad might bring. So if you're heading for the sand and surf, make sure you have something else to brag about.

"I tried in excess for seven hours and went to any forum I could that I thought would be helpful," that administrator continued. "I made sure that I did local loads for printer drivers and then went looking for network devices. I also tried various host/server scenarios back and forth with older to newer OS's acting as the server; still no sharing!"

When it comes down to which company makes a better business notebook, I think HP(HP NX7400 Battery) and Lenovo both offer exceptional products. Although in the end, it's about the look and feel you prefer. The HP EliteBook series offers a more refined brushed-metal appearance, while the ThinkPad line has a more rugged rubberized-paint old school-look. Overall, both notebooks deserve equal consideration if you're looking to buy a 12-inch business notebook.
