Intel ships Atom chips for servers, Windows and Linux at home
Intel today introduced update to the Atom processor-based platform for home and small business storage devices. Updated chip offers increased productivity and supports the new memory technology, Intel said.
New D425 1.8 GHz(single core) and D525(dual core) processors are combined with the Intel 82801 IR I / O controller, which provides connectivity. Both the new processor supports Microsoft Windows Home Server and the open source Linux. Higher frequency processors CPU to faster processing and storage will support the next generation DDR3 SODIMM. DDR3 SODIMM memory modules built-in two offer twice the I / O data rates of todays SDRAM.
In March, Intel announced its new Atom processor platform, which has been optimized for use in Network Attached Storage(NAS) devices for home and small businesses. is a platform for greater processing efficiency for the most popular consumer applications such as video processing by up to 85%. New hardware platform supports six PCI Express lanes, 12 USB ports and two eSATA ports.
Hardware manufacturers such as Acer, Cisco, LaCie, LG Electronics, Netgear, QNAP, Super Micro Synology and Thecus announced plans to offer products based on the new Atom platform, Intel said. Storage vendors of products containing the Intel Atom processor platforms are currently available and additional equipment will be released later this year, he added.
LaCie recently introduced two storage servers using Intel Atom processor technology to provide enterprise-level storage capacity to small and medium-sized enterprises, which were previously only with experience in large corporate environments, said Erwan Girard, head of business solutions.
Dinesh Rao, product line manager for Intels Storage Group, said that the new Atom processor allows storage vendors to develop energy-efficient appliances that can innocently sitting on a desk or shelf while keeping digital safe and accessible anytime, anywhere.
